is a dedicated leader, educator, and philanthropist with a lifelong commitment to her community in East Chicago, Indiana. She is the President of Sociedad Cultural y Cívica La Reforma (SCCLR), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has raised thousands of dollars for higher education scholarships benefiting students across Northwest Indiana and surrounding communities. Under her leadership, SCCLR fosters strong community relationships through unity and service, emphasizing the importance of education and giving back.

In addition to her work with SCCLR, Debra is the Director of Xel-Ha Escuela de Danza, a 501(c)(3) organization specializing in Mexican Ballet Folklore. Drawing on her extensive education, research, and training in Mexico City, she teaches aspiring dancers, blending culture, history, and artistry. Xel-Ha aims to enrich the body, mind, and soul of its students while delivering exquisite entertainment and professional folklore education. As one of the rare Mexican Ballet Folklore instructors in Northwest Indiana, Debra continues to inspire and mentor students and community members.

As a trailblazer in preserving and promoting Mexican Ballet Folklore, a champion for higher education scholarships, and a tireless supporter of community initiatives, Debra exemplifies the values of leadership, resilience, and generosity.

Debra’s community impact is far-reaching. Recently, she led fundraising efforts for the Carmelite Home in East Chicago after a tragic fire displaced its residents. She also co-organized the first annual Cancer Walk in October 2024, which drew 200 participants and raised $2,500 for the Cancer Resource Center in Munster, Indiana.

A lifetime resident of East Chicago, Debra graduated from Bishop Noll Institute in Hammond, Indiana, in 1976. In 1978, she began her education in the travel industry, completing courses with major airlines such as TWA and American Airlines. She later founded Galaxy Travel, successfully running the agency for over 25 years until her retirement in 2020.

Throughout her career, Debra has actively served numerous organizations, including:

Her contributions have been recognized with prestigious honors such as the East Chicago Public Library Leadership Award and the Indiana Heritage Fellowship Award from Indiana University Bloomington, celebrating her outstanding contributions to artistic tradition. 

21, Debra was elected to the East Chicago Common Council as Councilwoman At Large, serving for two years. In September 2024, she was nominated in the Influential Women of Northwest Indiana (Woman in Arts) category, highlighting her significant impact on arts and culture.
